Avalanche Basics

Avalanche accidents don't happen by accident:  Nearly every person that gets caught in an avalanche
triggers the avalanche or a member of his or her party does.

Our decisions determine whether we will be caught or not.

Those of us that go into the backcountry in winter have two basic choices:

1.   AVOIDING avalanche danger altogether by staying on terrain so low angle that it can not avalanche.

(This is the only totally certain way to avoid being caught in an avalanche)

                                             OR

2.   LEARNING to recognize avalanche danger and learning how to make decisions that greatly reduce our risk

MOST BACKCOUNTRY SKIERS, SNOWBOARDERS, AND SNOWMOBILE RIDERS EITHER INTENTIONALLY OR UNINTENTIONALLY EXPOSE THEMSELVES TO AVALANCHE DANGER AT SOME POINT IN THEIR BACKCOUNTRY TRAVELS.

THE GOAL OF THIS WEBSITE IS HELP YOU RECOGNIZE AVALANCHE DANGER SO YOU KNOW WHEN IT'S SMART TO GO AND WHEN IT'S TIME TO SAY NO!!
