Winter 2013 - 2014

Mountains in winter can be as dangerous as they are exhilerating.
If you want to develop the skills you need to survive in Planet Avalanche...this is the place to start; but it is very important that you also take an avalanche class before you head into the backcountry!!!

Check out the video above right and then click on either the Skier or the Snowmobile Rider icon above left for Avalanche Basics.

Doug Abromeit from the FS National Avalanche Center and Jennifer Self from Glacier Graphics developed this site with lots of help from Plummer Photography, Greg Boyer, Teton Gravity Research, Thunderstuck Films, Backcountry Access, Glisse Media, Karl Birkeland, Bruce Tremper, Janet Kellam, Jim Conway, Chris Lundy, Ann Marie Gardner, and Greg Johnson.

U.S.A. Avalanche
Fatalities: 2011 - 2012
Thirty-four people died in avalanches in the US this past winter and many more had very close calls.  32 fatalities were snowmobilers, climbers, skiers, and snowboarders out enjoying a day in the backcountry.
